Gardening on the up

The face of the garden centre may be changing if current trends continue. Building on the success of the Waitrose foray into the garden market other supermarkets may follow suit and build 'pods' outside the door. Waitrose hope to take 10% of the garden market by 2016 using display shelves rather than leaving plants on trolleys. Tesco-owned Dobbies is being eyed by garden centre chain Wyevale as a possible expansion project, should they decide to sell. Wyevale Garden Centres has a target of 200 centres. TV shopping channel QVC sales continue to grow with 280 live hours of gardening content in 2014. Richard Jackson, a regular presenter on QVC says that in a garden centre he can demonstrate the benefits of a plant or product to a single customer at a time, but on television he can do so to 30,000 people at once.
