These sap-sucking insects can weaken the growth of a wide range of plants. They appear as small green or brown bumps, usually 1-5mm in size often with a white fluffy halo around them.
There are many different species of scale insects that attack cultivated plants. Some are found on the stems of plants, others on the undersides of leaves. Colours vary from pale green to dark brown. Heavy infestations result in poor growth and a gradual weakening of the plant. Some scale insects produce their eggs under a layer of white fibres in early summer
