The earwig is a slender brown insect, up to 15 mm long, easily distinguished by a pair of pincer-like structures on the rear end.
Flower petals, young leaves and seedlings are eaten leaving jagged edges to the damaged areas. They are night feeders, so can be difficult to spot. They can also be beneficial as they often feed on small insects, particularly aphids.
