Chafer grubs

Image of Chafer grubs

Description

These are the juvenile stage of the cockchafer beetle. They are about 2cm long with white bodies, light brown heads and three pairs of legs. They often curl into a C-shape when disturbed. These grubs prefer lighter, well-drained soils.

Symptoms

Patches of lawn grass turning yellow and dying. When these areas are inspected the grass is easily removed as these insects feed on the grass roots. Untidy, ragged turf often looks ‘tufted’ where birds such as magpies and starlings have pulled up the dead grass. Badgers and foxes may also damage large areas of turf in searching for the grubs.

What next...

Now you know what the problem is, and the damage it is doing, don't let your plant suffer.
