Kirstenbosch was established in 1913 as the first botanical garden in South Africa dedicated to preserving the country's unique flora. It was named after Kirstenbosch Estate, which was bequeathed to the South African government by Cecil John Rhodes.

The garden showcases the diverse flora of South Africa, with over 7,000 species of plants, including fynbos, proteas, cycads, restios, and various other endemic and exotic plants. The garden's collections are organized into different sections, such as the Fragrance Garden, Erica Garden, Cycad Amphitheatre, and the unique and iconic Canopy Walkway.
