Orchard Renovation

Alison Findlay, Regional Advisor to the Royal Horticultural Society Campaign for School Gardening (East of England) is overseeing the renovation of a 40 year old orchard for Castlemanor Academy, Haverhill, Suffolk. The orchard is now being used as an outdoor learning space with grass kept under control by sheep grazing beneath the trees. The Academy hosted its first apple day event to celebrate the restoration last autumn. Students from Burton End primary school and Place Farm primary school attended along with helpers from Castle Manors eco committee pupils. Parents and children from Sand castles playgroup joined in the fun at lunch time. Activities included an orchard quiz and trail, led by Alison, apple juicing, craft activities and a competition to see who could get the longest apple peel- 31cm was the winner! Mrs Baldwin, outdoor learning coordinator at Castlemanor Academy organised the event to encourage outdoor learning across the partnership. A great time was had by all, the children were buzzing afterwards.
