Early carrots

Free carrot seeds in some 20 different varieties are now on their way to 100 schools who registered to grow crops for the Chelsea Flower Show 2015. The above photograph shows members of St. Michaels Church of England Junior School in Essex making their first sowing. Please note the compost is a little lower down in the pot than usual, this is to allow extra compost to be added when roots start to form. Covering the shoulders of each root prevents them going green when exposed to sunlight. Once sown the pots need to go somewhere warm until the first signs of white shoots appear. When this happens the pots need to be moved to a light window sill or greenhouse.
