New Gardening Year

A large class of youngsters kicked off their new gardening year at Charlton Manor School, Greenwich, London, this week with a master class in seed sowing given by the School Gardener Mr. Nick Shelley. The youngsters had great fun handling the compost, checking it was damp enough and loosening well before filling the pots, then sowing their seed. A good crop for all ages to sow at this time is salad leaves. Seeds scattered thinly over the surface of a pot filled with Universal Potting Compost will be up in days and grown on a light window sill ready to cut and eat in a few weeks.
