Top Garden Pests for 2012

1 Slugs

Can devastate plants. May kill younger plants and seedlings, as well as weakening established ones. Prefer wet conditions and last year’s wet summer provided them with perfect conditions in which to thrive. Often found in the gutter between the edge of the lawn and border.

Control

2 Cushion scale

Often found on evergreen plants and shrubs, such as camellias. Excrete a sticky product called honeydew which then leads to black sooty mould appearing. May lead to premature leaf fall of sooty leaves and weakening of the plant.

Control

Biological control: Just Hard Scale Killer from Just Green (only for indoor use). 3 Vine weevil

The adult females eat leaves, leaving notches eaten from leaf margin. Grubs feed on plant roots, damaging and even killing plants. Preferred plants include Cyclamen, Heuchera, Sedum and Strawberries, but they will attack almost anything.

4 Ants

Tend to burrow around the roots of plants, often creating mounds. Cause distress to plants once their roots are no longer in close contact with soil/compost making them dry out quickly. Ants prefer warm, dry conditions and often have a close association with aphids attacking the same host plant.

5 Mealybugs

These insects suck sap from plants and excrete a sticky product called honeydew, which then leads to black sooty mould appearing. They prefer warm conditions and are found mainly on greenhouse plants and houseplants. Often only noticed when populations are well established on the plant.

6 Soft scale

Scale insects are static feeders which suck sap from a range of plants, both outside and inside the house. Often found along the midrib (main vein on the underside of the leaf). Usually first noticed when the sticky product called honeydew or black sooty mould are seen on the lower leaves

7 Woolly aphid

Sap-sucking aphid that feed on fruit trees and ornamental shrubs, particularly Cotoneaster, Pyracantha and other relatives of the rose. The insects are concealed beneath white, cotton wool-like fluff which is waterproof and very effective at repelling sprays. An aphid wearing a macintosh.

8 Cypress aphid

The cypress aphid feeds on the sap of conifers, particularly hedges, causing the foliage to dry up and die. Seen as large brown (dead) patches of foliage. Spraying your conifers, just outside the brown areas where they are feeding, can stop infestation occurring.

9 Fuchsia gall mite

An new pest to the UK, this has only been here 5 years, but it can devastate fuchsias, feeding inside the young shoot tips causing distorted shoots. Often the damage is done long before the pest is spotted. They can be very hard to get rid of.

10 Lily beetle

This leaf-eating pest likes to eat leaves and lay its eggs on lilies and fritillaries. Attacks early in the summer can result in small bulbs developing, which may struggle to flower the next year. High populations cause bulbs to gradually weaken and die.

11 Rosemary beetle

This insect eats the leaves of rosemary, lavender, thyme, sage and some other related plants, and can completely strip an established plant within a season. The adult beetles feed, mate and lay eggs from late-summer and can continue to do so on warm winter days until spring.

12 Red spider mite

This is one of the most troublesome pests of greenhouse plants and houseplants. It is a sap-sucking mite that feeds on foliage, causing a mottled appearance, and in severe cases, leaf loss. It can often be detected when it creates a protective webbing over leaves and stems of host plants.

13 Viburnum beetle

Viburnum beetle is a leaf eating pest of some Viburnum species. Heavy infestations lead to severely damaged foliage, with brown dried up edges to the holes created by the feeding insects. Most of the damage is caused by the larvae in late spring, but some further feeding damage is done by the adult beetles in late summer.
